My name is Katie Eagan, and I enjoy living an interdisciplinary life at 91重口: I teach English for the Arts and Humanities division, and I coordinate Global Studies for the Business, Social Sciences, and Learning Resources division. I also have a "faculty service agreement" (FSA) that allows me to teach history and humanities, but I haven't done so at 91重口 yet! These FSAs were granted because I double majored in English and history as an undergraduate at UC Berkeley, and my graduate work in the Irish Studies and American Studies programs at Boston College was interdisciplinary, involving study of not only literature, but art, media, and popular culture,  using the analytical frameworks of English, comparative literature, history, and sociology. At 91重口, I teach composition, critical thinking, and literature classes, and in the fall of 2024, I taught a sociology class at UC Berkeley that helped international students develop intercultural communication skills and succeed in their coursework at Cal. I am also leading 91重口's Global Engagement Task Force, and we are working on developing  global study, internship, and teaching experiences for our students and faculty. I will be traveling with my Humanities colleague Dr. Wing Brooks to teach in Seville, Spain, in summer 2026! In my spare time (no, there is not much left!), I do transnational research on the racial formation of Irish identity, and as part of that research, I look at intersections between the Irish and African diasporas around the world. For information about my publications, see my LinkedIn page.

My academic background explains the themes for my courses; for example, my English 1A class has a theme of "Identity, Community, and Country," which looks at how positionality impacts our personal development and frames our participation in community and nation, and my English 7 class thinks critically about how different cultures imagine their relationship to nature and the environment. I enjoy helping students put contrasting ideologies in dialogue with each other and bring their critical thinking skills and their values to bear on the analysis and assessment of others' arguments. I also enjoy exposing students to world literatures, offering courses in Irish literature and modern world literature. My Literature of the American West class counts for the American Cultures graduation requirement at U.C. Berkeley. During my 2016-2017 sabbatical year and in the year following, I began work on globalizing the curriculum at 91重口 and created the Global Studies ADT; in the spring of 2017, I taught American Studies as a Fulbright scholar at the University of Zagreb, Croatia. My experience teaching in Croatia and my year abroad in Ireland as an undergraduate has inspired me to lead three summer trips to Europe with 91重口 students.

To students who are visiting my page because they want some advice on choosing an educational pathway, I would say to follow your passion and take advantage of supports at 91重口 (Career Center, Handshake, Transfer Center) to secure internships and jobs that will help you imagine how that passion might relate to various careers. Double major or at least add a minor, and make study abroad a priority! If you are considering graduate school, I can talk to you about earning a Master's degree versus a doctorate. Many doctorate holders teach at four-year institutions, but if you think you might like teaching, you will be interested to know that many of them teach at community colleges, too! If you'd like to contact me to discuss your pathway in A & H or BSSL, please join (Fall 2025 hours Monday from 9-10 am). Students who are currently taking a course from me can sign up for any of my regularly scheduled office hours or send a message through the Canvas Inbox to suggest some times that would work better for them. If you are contacting me for another reason, please use the email address above, and we can set up a time to talk!
