5.1 New Courses
BIO 29D Independent Study, Dissection — Tabled to the next meeting.
NJAM 221 Journalism and Media Studies
Presenter: Melissa Korber
Effective Term: Fall 2027
Melissa Korber shared that the course could improve accessibility for students by creating a pathway that does not require independent study.
Craig Kutil noted that the program is similar to the credit JAMS course.
Christina Lee asked whether the lab component would change as students register.
Craig Kutil explained that, with variable units, the instructor will determine lab hours for the semester. One lab hour per week equals 18 hours per semester, and the maximum is three hours per week, or 54 hours per semester.
Melissa Korber said the course may begin with one lab hour per week and that student interest will help determine the final structure.
Craig Kutil clarified that the NJAM course is not an exact mirror of the credit course because it does not include a CPL option and is changing from workforce preparation to the short-term vocational noncredit area.
Craig Kutil also asked whether the lab activities listed in the content would remain incomplete if no lab were offered.
Melissa Korber stated that the other JAMS course includes lab activities students will or can complete.

7. Discussion Items
7.1 Competency-Based Education
The committee discussed rewriting CORs to reflect competencies rather than traditional outcomes or objectives.
The course model does not have a term limit and assessments are conducted in person.
The model was described as one of the most flexible ways for students to learn and especially useful in prison-system implementation.
Marsha Vernoga asked whether this would apply only to local classes or also to general education.
Craig Kutil responded that statewide work to create competencies for GE classes has already been completed.
7.2 DEI and UDL Procedure
The committee discussed adopting a written procedure regarding UDL, with the policy planned for First Reading.
8. Reports
8.1 Vice President’s Report
The online catalog is almost ready to be published.
8.2 Chair’s Report
There are a few catalog bugs, including a KIN course that should be deactivated, cross-listed courses showing twice, and missing subject codes or numbers.
Courses impacted by the sunset policy will be discussed at the next meeting for First Reading.
The Librarian is no longer part of the committee this semester, which brings quorum to four out of seven members.
Division technical reviewers were asked to continue moving items through workflow and to email faculty or chairs directly when submissions need to be returned or reviewed.
The Chair will substitute for the Librarian position and assist with moving items through workflow.
The committee was asked to focus on the IDEAA section and overall feedback; spelling or minor errors should simply be noted before moving items through workflow.
8.3 Articulation Officer’s Report
Cal-GETC standards for Areas 1A, 1B, and 2 are under review to better align with UC transferability.
There are currently no changes to Area 1C, though there has been discussion of including additional classes where appropriate.
Area 1A is aligning more closely to UC transferability, but there is an issue involving a missing statement related to substantive literature. CCN guidance indicates CCN English courses must include that element.
Mathematics is unlikely to fully align because of prerequisites and specific course language.
Area 6 updates are still under development, particularly regarding discipline parameters.
The Data Science TMC is complete. 91ؿ may be able to offer the Data Science program if Introduction to Data Science is developed. The TMC is aligned with UC transfer.
9. Good of the Order
No additional notes were recorded in the minutes beyond the listed heading.
